Dubai Desert Safari with Flippers

March 28th, 2009

For past three weeks Sheeban was bugging everyone that we should be going out somewhere on a weekend. Last week we decided that we go for Desert Safari. The next issue which travel agency was cheap and good. After the hunt we found Oasis Palm Tourism was a good option. After discount they charged 160 AED per head, which included whole lot of options. It was a real good deal. We started today afternoon around 3:00 PM from Al Ghurair City. They took us somewhere near Hatta – Oman highway around 40 km drive from Dubai.

On the way we visited the entrance of Sheikh’s palace. The whole place was flooded with peacocks and it was an amazing scene.

We halted for sometime before the ride in the sand dunes and took some nice pictures. To be honest it was little scary when the car was sliding on the dune slopes. I managed to take few shots even though it was impossible to hold the camera as the whole car was shaking a lot.

Next halt was for dune surfing and almost everyone tried except me :-( as I have very bad experience with skiing. After that we went for some more rounds and saw camel farm on the way to the camp.

The final stop was at the camp where we had snacks, shisha, dinner and the most awaited “Belly Dancing;-)

I should thank the whole team for making to this trip. It was a very good experience.

P.S: I have more nice pictures at very high resolution and if anyone wants can contact me personally ;-)

Completed three years as a flipper

March 19th, 2009

fliplogo Wow!! This week I completed three year working in Flip Media Dubai. I joined Flip in 16th March 2006 and I can still remember my first day in office. I enjoyed working @ flip and it is always challenging, full of excitement and we work on the latest trend and technology for the web.

During the past three year I was playing a part in developing Chameleon CMS. I would like to thank my buddy Shuja Shabandri ( he will be updating his blog soon ;-) ) for giving me this wonderful opportunity to work in Flip and in Chameleon team. I would like to thank Dinesh Lalavni and Martin Diessner for their constant support and constant thirst for latest technology in web. Without them we are bullet shot without a target. I would like to thank each and everyone working @ flip and giving me full support throughout these years.

Awaiting more fun and challenges in the years to come and I am sure I will be blogging about it all.

Digital Music Innovation at Flip

February 24th, 2009

Flip’s own Head of Delivery, Paul A. Zwarts (aka Paz) has been a DJ and producer since the early 1990s. Having lived and played in Toronto, Amsterdam and Dubai, Paz now has teamed up with partner in crime Marko Ben-Aicha, aka Smokingroove. The dynamic duo have started their own record label called Mixtura Records which looks towards supporting a very small scene in Dubai which is oriented around genres like Chicago House and Drum & Bass.

Paz and Smokingroove Mixtura is derived between the word “Mix” and the Portuguese word “Mistura” which also means mixed. Paz & Smokingroove are making headway in their industry for their themed releases which have so far covered infused styles like 40’s Swing and Latino/Brazilian sounds.

Having already released two Eps which are Ethnic/Brasilian oriented, these two music makers are teaming up with several artists including Flip’s own Mazen Abou Hatab (aka Meezus).

The future is looking bright for these guys as they aim to create music, sell online and get into new and interesting markets like video games and television scores.

“Our music is not for the masses. Although we are very open to all types of music, we are very much aware that Dubai is about pop culture. There happens to be a lot of people here who dont agree with this. Our job is to meet that in ways that compliment our own tastes and experiences.” says Paz.

“There are places opening up in Dubai that are thinking about format and music more than fancy display and expensive budgets. This kind of thing is dying with the credit crunch and we can no longer treat music as pure vanity and wastah. Our music definitely reflects this attitude.”

Recently Hive, a very chic yet down to earth bar, restaurant opened in Souk Al Bahar. Mixtura’s Smokingroove is a resident there, supported by Paz.

“You’ll find us playing our own wares and styles similar at places like Hive and Alphaclub which appreciate that music is about mood and format, rather than yet another place to listen to top 10 hits which are found on your car’s radio.”

All in all, niche thinking is the way to survive in the present economy and idealizing where specific markets exist will ensure longevity. Flip Media, prided in it’s thinking towards web-based business objectives is proud to know that this kind of mentality is transcended into a Flipper’s way of life rather than just a job.

You can listen and find out where to buy all digitally released music on www.mixturarecords.com.

Flip Media launched it’s own portal for mumbaikars !!!

February 18th, 2009

Flip Media Dubai launched a new portal mumbaikar.com for mumbaikars. The site was launched in beta stage and we are updating the functionality and features of every day.

mumbaikar.com

Mumbaikar is the Marathi word to signify a resident of Mumbai. Even though the term has been in use for quite some time it gained popularity after the formal renaming of the city to its original name Mumbai[citation needed]. The renaming and rise in the popularity of the term led to common adoption of the term Mumbaikar. Generally speaking, the term encompasses a whole range of ethnicities and cultures of which Mumbai is a melting pot.

Its a general practice in Marathi language speakers to add the verb kar (which means do or does) to the end of individuals native village/place of residence and refer the person using it. So based on this general rule natives of Pune city are called as Punekar, Nashik city as Nashikkar and so on using. It is also fairly common to find people who have their last name based on this rule, so some natives of Goregaon do have their last name as Goregaonkar, similarly Chiplunkar from Chiplun and so on. Similar surnames based on profession with a kar at the end are also very common.
